Make a video recording of the 'Sisterhood' chorus and send us a copy to upload.
The lyrics remind us that we often face the hardships of being a woman alone. Let's use that understanding, born from difficulty, to offer sisterhood to other women, when we see them in need. We hope to inspire women to communicate about, and to each other through music. |

'Sisterhood' is the result of a year long grassroots collaborative project called Women Safe & Sound.
All aspects of the music and film were made entirely by women. |
With Your Involvement We Hope To:Reinforce the women that helped create Sisterhood. Many of the women did not consider themselves artistic before this project.
Inspire similar projects. Reinforce female musicians to honour each others’ work. Inspire women to communicate about/and to each other through music. Amplify the message in the music, which is a call to action for women to help women facing of male violence. You Might Notice...We celebrate the trust and intimacy between women, especially the bond that comes from telling on him. Whoever him might be.
We promote alliance between women helping each other escape a violent man. We draw attention to the power of water. We appreciate the ways in which women use water to heal. We recognize the global connection between pillaging the earth and male violence against women. We pay homage to Indigenous women who despite the disproportionate rates of male violence and lack of justice, fight on the front lines as water protectors. We represent a range of skin colours and rejoice the beauty of dark tones. |
Full LyricsSisterhood
Sister opens the back door Woman walks in Sister removes woman’s mask Shows a green and yellow stain Sister puts on hot water Lets the tea steep Woman opens her mouth Then the dam breaks They follow water down to the ocean Where herstories meet Woman pulls the loose strings Of her tattered fabric Sister extends her hand Woman flinches, systematic In silence sip, sip and sip Faucet fills the tub Drip, drip, and drip Sister lays out dresses On the peaceful bed Woman takes time selecting Purple, pink, or red Woman, Sister Sister, Woman When you a woman? When you a sister? When you a sister woman? Every woman needs a sister Every sister needs a hood Woman soaks her skin Splashes at the bubbles Blue turns to rust Taking on her troubles Woman steps out bare brass Turns to pull the drain Dirty water gurgles Only scummy ring remains Sister knocks and brings a towel Together they scrub off the foul Conscious mirror waits to see Who the woman choose to be Sister finds her standing tall As if there were no storm at all Sister gestures to the chair Strong fingers untangles her hair Splits in 3, in 6, in 9 A braid for each year wasted time Woman's shoulder sister's hand Missing tarnished wedding band Woman, Sister Sister, Woman When you a woman? When you a sister? When you a sister woman? Every woman needs a sister Every sister needs a hood Hands extended - interlinked Silent witness doesn't blink Penny sounds an echoed story Woman reaches into dress Not enough to build a future Just enough to take a step Sister brushes up the palette Paints 3 lines across her cheek Warriors adorned set to face Raising fists they rise to lead Woman, Sister Sister, Woman When you a woman? When you a sister? When you a sister woman? Every woman needs a sister Every sister needs a hood |
