Girls Dance Music Video

This is the second video from the pilot program Girls Dance Music Video. Building on last year, the program developed into an intergenerational project with all original music and dance.

About the program

Girls Dance was our second music video pilot project. A core group of women: choreographer Courtney Loppie, singer/songwriter Samm Splash, Andrea Dorfman guided teen girls in discussions about popular music videos and how they compare to the reality of their own lives and the lives of their friends and family.

Based on these conversations, Samm Splash and Tamar Dina composed original music for the dance music video, reflecting the ideas, observations, disappointments, and aspirations of the teen girls. The participants recorded the music together at Centreline Studios.

Younger girls joined the project in the second phase, which included the musical recording, dance rehearsals and filming. A public screening showcased and celebrated the completion of the project. Girls Got Song is the current manifestation of this project.

"My name is Carmahn McCalla, and I was one of the participants in the Girls Dance Music Video. I was shy in the beginning of the program because I didn't know many people there. I joined in the hopes of learning new dancing skills and making new friends, which I believe I accomplished. My shyness went away as the program went on; the positive attitude from the team helped with that. There was a point in the program when we were just going to ditch the video and turn ourselves into a dance workout group, but then I realized that Girls Dance was really important to me. Even I didn't talk often, I usually left each session with a smile on my face. We did end up filming/ recording, and even though I was embarrassed about recording my voice, it turned out to be worth it in the end. I'd like to think I gained something from this experience, whether it be a sense of accomplishment, new dance moves to show off, or both. But I think the real treasure is the hoodie I got!"
