Music Liberatory aims to dramatically increase the number of female instrumentalists by providing vision and alliance. Music Liberatory offers free music programs to women and girls and collaborates with artists and other groups working to create feminist music cultures.
We believe that everyone is born with musical ability and that women and girls in particular, continue to be systemically denied opportunity, and taught to underestimate their capacity and value in musical expression and beyond.
Women are grossly under and mis-represented in music. Many important role models are hidden or erased from history, despite the fact that outstanding women played significant roles in all genres. Spaces for music making are often hostile and uncomfortable. Some men purposefully belittle and undermine women's contributions while others refuse to do what it takes to equalize the playing field.
Learning and playing music in a feminist environment is different by design. Feminists take into account all the negative messages women internalize and counter those with a comfortable atmosphere, adaptable learning tools, regular encouragement and sisterhood.
Music Liberatory works to create vibrant and honest female led music cultures. With focus on the current and potential leadership of women of colour, the Music Liberatory wishes to see all women benefit from sharing of music and the freedom this experience brings.
Only a desire to share music is ever needed. No previous music experience or education is required for any of our programs. Instruments are available to use free of charge.
Women with musical skills are encouraged to volunteer.
We are located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
